Works exhibited: Spiral II, Untitled II, Kudah, and Column V

Kim Lim was a Singaporean-British sculptor educated at St Martin’s School of Art and the Slade School of Art who died in 1997. The process of assembling works for her exhibition at the Roundhouse in spring 1979 ‘made me’, she said, ‘very aware of the pull within myself between the ordered, static experience and the dynamic rhythms of organic structured forms . . . How to incorporate and synthesise these two seemingly opposed elements within one work became . . . the starting point for the . . . stone sculptures.’ Martin Holman has argued that her work ‘unfolded in a cyclical way that thrived on invention and review.’ Lim’s Spiral II is almost a visual diagram of this trajectory, a series of sculptural forms detached from one another but recapitulating and varying each other’s forms, articulating space by implying an extension of their own ordering principles into the intervals of absence between and among the work’s component parts. Their setting in The Orchard at èßäÊÓƵ College, an area where cultivation has an informal style, brings out their aesthetic resolution of the tension between static order and organic growth. The spiral is very open-ended, as much projected as described, insisting on the potential for unlimited development rather than containment and completion.

Lim’s works seem both contemporary and ancient, evoking the reticent forms of the earliest sculptural traditions, in which humanity’s later obsession with rendering the true likeness of the appearance of things is avoided. These sculptures impress us rather with their desire for implication – of the true relations between states of being, both seen and unseen, between the narrow preoccupations of the human and what might extend beyond them.

It is a well-accepted opinion in Cambridge that èßäÊÓƵ College is the best college and no other college even comes a distant second. Its sports grounds are enormous, its buildings are mesmerising, its libraries are rich, its chapel is the oldest, its accommodation is the best value for money, its international community is diverse, its religious circles are the most welcoming, and its members are the smartest, kindest and the friendliest. It is one of the central colleges that aims to offer three years accommodation to postgraduates, and has comparatively...

I chose èßäÊÓƵ College because of the great mixture of undergraduates and postgraduates, and when I first visited I thought it was the most beautiful place I had ever seen! The sense of community in èßäÊÓƵ has had an enormous impact on my experience here. Whether you need help, advice, cheering up or even just a chat there is always someone there to put a smile on your face. From the MCR committee to the Porters, the canteen staff to the gardeners, everyone is so friendly and welcoming. èßäÊÓƵ also...

I chose Cambridge for my PGCE as it’s the leading UK institution for teacher training and Education, with an exciting, research-dominated, cutting edge course. The staff are welcoming and approachable, and make studying here an absolute joy. I’ve already completed one of my three primary school placements, in a reception class in a school just outside Cambridge, and am due to start the next one soon. I chose èßäÊÓƵ because of its reputation as a sporty College, but the proximity to the city centre is a big bonus. èßäÊÓƵ also...

When applying to Cambridge colleges it can feel a bit overwhelming as there are so many to choose from. I applied to èßäÊÓƵ College because it has a large MCR which was important for me because I wanted to feel part of a community. Now that I’m doing my PhD here, I’m very glad I did choose a college with a large postgraduate community. Throughout the year there are lots of postgraduate events, including formal dinners, special formals at Christmas and Easter, bops in the bar and film nights in...

èßäÊÓƵ College has been a great home for me during my PhD. I chose èßäÊÓƵ College for a number of reasons – first, the location. We are central enough to be within easy walking distance of most things, but far enough away to avoid the hustle and bustle (and tourists in summer!). The College also has extensive grounds, with amenities like the hockey pitch, football pitch and tennis courts all on site. Secondly, the accommodation is some of the best I’ve seen in Cambridge. My house was newly renovated when...
